The College of Medicine at the University of Lagos (CMUL) inducted 25 radiography graduates into the profession for the 2023/2024 session, urging them to uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism.
During the 10th Radiography Induction Ceremony in Lagos, the Provost, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, was represented by Deputy Provost Prof. Daniel Odebiyi. commended the graduates for their achievements and emphasized the importance of integrity, whether practicing locally or abroad. He advised them to prioritize continuous learning, innovation, and patient-centered care to excel in their careers.
“Ongoing education and collaboration are vital to keeping pace with the evolving medical field,” Prof. Oremosu stated. “Uphold professionalism, integrity, and compassion as you advance.”
Guest Lecturer Dr. Robert Akhigbe, a Specialist Radiographer, challenged the new radiographers to be positive change agents within Nigeria’s healthcare system. He underscored the importance of respecting patient dignity, maintaining confidentiality, and practicing empathy.
“Radiation is a tool for hope and life. Serve your patients with dignity and compassion,” Dr. Akhigbe urged. “While international opportunities exist, always aim to return and contribute to the growth of healthcare in Nigeria.”
Prof. Mark Okeji, Registrar of the Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN), administered the induction oath, reminding graduates to be ambassadors of the profession and contributors to national development.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Bola Oboh has emphasized the critical need for skilled imaging professionals in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
She highlighted the urgent requirement for professionals trained in medical imaging technologies such as MRI, CT scans, and radiotherapy, urging them to remain in the country for at least two to three years before considering emigration.
With the increasing trend of healthcare workers leaving Nigeria, often referred to as ‘japa’ – a colloquial term meaning to flee abroad for better opportunities – Prof Oboh stressed that these professionals play an indispensable role in supporting doctors and enhancing patient care. “We need a lot of them to support and assist our doctors to be able to treat our patients right,” he stated. “They are key to anything that has to do with imaging.”
The professor’s remarks come against the backdrop of a growing shortage of medical imaging specialists, which is impacting the quality of healthcare services available to Nigerians. He noted that while the allure of foreign opportunities is strong, the nation greatly benefits from their expertise at home, particularly in life-saving diagnostics and treatments.
“Medical imaging is not just about technology; it’s about saving lives,” Prof Oboh remarked. “We employ these experts to put in their best, and with their skills, we can drastically improve health outcomes in our communities.”
The call to action resonated with many at the summit, sparking discussions about potential incentives to encourage imaging professionals to stay and contribute to the country’s healthcare system. Suggestions included increased salaries, better working conditions, and professional development opportunities.
As the challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare system are addressed, the hope is that future policies will aim to create a more conducive environment that not only retains talented professionals but also attracts those who have left to return home.
Prof Oboh concluded with a heartfelt appeal: “To our imaging professionals, we need you. Your contributions can help transform healthcare in Nigeria, and together, we can build a system that truly serves the needs of our people.”
The event also celebrated academic excellence, with Sofowora Folakemi, the top graduate, expressing gratitude to her family, government, and college authorities. Awards were presented to outstanding students across various radiography specialties.
Notable attendees included Dr. Musa Dambele, National President of the Association of Radiographers of Nigeria (ARN), and Prof. Chris Okeafor, Chairman of the College of Medicine Alumni Association, among others.
