. 10 die in Ogun lone vehicle accident

No fewer than 21 travellers lost their lives in a fatal road crash on Sunday at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsalle, along the Zaria–Kano highway.
Three others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the tragic incident which occurred at about 8:23 a.m.
A statement by CRC Abdullahi Labaran, Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano State Sector Command, for the Sector Commander confirmed the crash.
The crash involved two vehicles, a DAF Trailer with registration number GWL 422 ZE, and a Toyota Hummer Bus with registration number KMC 171 YM, the statement added.
He said that a preliminary investigation conducted by the FRSC rescue team revealed that the crash was caused by route violation by the driver of the Toyota Hummer Bus, which led to a head-on collision with the trailer.
The impact, the statement added, resulted in a fire outbreak that engulfed the vehicles.
”Upon receiving the crash report, the Sector Commander, Corps Commander MB Bature, immediately contacted the Federal and State Fire Services to assist in extinguishing the fire, while the FRSC rescue team proceeded to the scene for rescue and evacuation operations.
“A total of 24 people were involved in the crash. 21 persons lost their lives, three others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“The burnt bodies of the deceased were evacuated and deposited at Nassarawa Hospital Mortuary, Kano, while the injured victims were taken to Garun Malam General Hospital for medical attention.”
“The road obstruction caused by the accident was successfully cleared by FRSC Rs1.2 Kano Tow Truck operatives in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, and normal traffic flow has since been restored.
“The Sector Commander, CC MB Bature, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.
“He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured and called on all road users to strictly obey traffic rules, particularly avoiding dangerous overtaking, route violations, and night travels.”
“The Corps remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and urges the public to remain vigilant and law-abiding on the highways”, he said.
Meanwhile, eight passengers tragically lost their lives during an auto-crash involving a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus, registration no KJA 811 YF, and a DAF truck, marked T1 4636 LA on Sunday, at Atura Bus Stop, Badagry area of Lagos State.
According to a release by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, eight other passengers who sustained injuries in the accident, had been taken to the hospital.
Taofiq said, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) profoundly regrets to announce a grievous and fatal road traffic collision which occurred today at Atura Bus Stop, inbound Badagry, involving a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus, registration number KJA 811 YF, and a DAF truck, marked T1 4636 LA.
“The tragic accident instantly claimed the lives of eight passengers, including the driver of the ill-fated bus and his conductor, casting a somber pall over the Badagry axis and leaving the community in profound mourning and collective grief.”
He disclosed that LASTMA operatives, in concert with personnel from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Police and the army, swiftly launched a coordinated rescue operation at the accident scene.
According to him, their timely intervention led to the successful rescue of eight surviving passengers, all of whom sustained varying degrees of trauma.
The victims were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Badagry via an FRSC vehicle for critical medical attention.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the commercial bus lost control while navigating at a perilously high speed, leading to a catastrophic collision with a DAF truck.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited the crash site to personally evaluate the situation, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for divine fortitude to help them withstand the immeasurable and irreplaceable loss.
“This heart-wrenching incident is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for all road users to embrace caution. No journey should end in such tragedy. May the Almighty grant the deceased eternal rest and console those left behind,” he solemnly declared.
He further extended warm wishes for a swift and full recovery to the surviving victims still undergoing treatment.
Mr. Bakare-Oki issued a stern admonition to commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, urging them to eschew excessive speeding, adhere strictly to safety protocols, and ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to avoid unnecessary fatalities.
“This regrettable loss of lives could have been avoided if the basic tenets of defensive driving and vehicular safety had been upheld. Speed remains a silent killer on our highways,” he warned emphatically.
The General Manager reiterated the Agency’s transition from conventional traffic regulation to a more holistic incident management paradigm. This shift, he noted, is in alignment with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, which prioritizes preventive safety measures, rapid emergency response, and infrastructural innovation in urban mobility.
“We are no longer merely controlling traffic; we are managing emergencies, mitigating disasters, and saving lives. This is the ethos of contemporary traffic administration,” he emphasized.
He also highlighted the deployment of speed-limiting mechanisms at critical flashpoints across Lagos—part of the State Government’s broader commitment to reducing road carnage, protecting commuters, and fostering a culture of compliance and safety.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 10 persons have been confirmed dead, while three others sustained injuries in a lone crash involving a Mitsubishi bus on Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
Akinbiyi said the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Ome Bridge, Awa, along Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan highway in Ijebu North Local Government Area.
He stated that the lone crash involved a Mitsubishi bus, registration number EJ829-LSR, which was conveying 15 passengers at the time.
According to Akinbiyi, seven male and three female passengers died. Three others were injured, while a toddler and one adult escaped unhurt.
He said preliminary findings indicate that overspeeding and wrongful overtaking led to the accident.
“Eyewitnesses said the driver wrongly overtook another vehicle at high speed and could not regain control after noticing an oncoming vehicle.
“The driver veered off the road, hit an abandoned gravel pile beside the bridge, and plunged the vehicle into the river,” Akinbiyi explained.
He said the deceased were taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital’s morgue, while the injured were also being treated at the same facility.
The spokesperson urged motorists to avoid speeding and to refrain from travelling at night, stressing the importance of road safety at all times. (NAN)
