Independent system operator to commence digitization and automation for grid stability

 The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) says it has commenced the digitisation and automation initiative that will give real-time system visibility, smart data analytics and improve the national grid.

Mr. Abdu Mohammed, Managing Director, Nigerian Independent System Operator, made this known in Abuja on Tuesday at the unveiling of NISO’s logo, mission, vision and core values.

Mohammed also said that NISO was in partnership with global technology leaders, Huawei, to have a modern Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition SCADA-) and Energy Management System (EMS) infrastructure.

According to him, this is the kind of progress that turns institutions from reactive to proactive.

”Our logo, as you will see shortly, represents energy flow and balance. It reflects structure, motion, and above all, it reflects control.

“The kind of control a system operator must maintain over an increasingly complex power system,” he said.

Mohammed said that the mission of NISO was clear and unambiguous.

“It is to manage Nigeria’s electricity grid with reliability, efficiency and transparency, enabling a sustainable and competitive power sector that drives economic growth and improves quality of life.

”Our vision dares us to be bold: An established electricity market that empowers economic growth and sustainable energy for national development.

”Our core values are integrity, transparency, sustainability, professionalism, innovation, collaboration, reliability, safety, boldness and neutrality.

”These are not decorative statements, they are the principles by which every one of us will be evaluated.

“They will shape our decisions, our leadership style, our relationships, and our legacy,” he said.

He said NISO was capable of becoming a world class organisation with its present leadership.

“With the leadership we have, I am confident that we will get there.

”We intend to deepen our participation globally, with partners like the West African Power Pool, where we contribute, not just as observers, but as allies in regional electricity planning.

”Our site engagements, reflects a management team that is not content with boardroom assumptions, we go and see for ourselves,” he said.

Mohammed said that with this unveiling, NISO began the next phase.

He called on stakeholders, to wear the new identity and to live it, adding that it is not about titles.

“It is about standards. It’s about showing others how we do things at NISO.

”You must be ambassadors of this brand, upholding its values, defending its reputation, and demanding excellence across every layer of our operations.

”Let us not forget, the future of Nigeria’s electricity supply depends on trust. Trust in the market; in the grid and in institutions like NISO.

“That trust must begin here with us. So, let us step forward with pride and wear this identity with honour,” he said.

Mr. Babajide Ibironke, Executive Director, Finance and Cooperate Services, NISO, said that said that the mission was to manage Nigeria’s electricity grid with reliability, efficiency and transparency.

Ibironke said that the grid’s reliability would enable a sustainable and competitive power sector that drives economic growth and improves quality of life.

According to him, NISO’s vision is to be that established electricity market that empowers economic growth and sustainable energy for national development.

‘We have some core values that were carefully selected and defined. We did not just select these core values, we defined them. And every staff member is expected to abide by these.

”It was very important that we have the integrity, the kind of independence we want to have, and the market that we want to administer,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NISO is a newly established entity responsible for managing the operations of the Nigerian electricity grid and electricity market.

It was created by unbundling the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to ensure impartial and independent operation of the grid and market.

NISO’s core functions include grid and market operations, asset and liability management, and system planning.
