The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje local government of Ondo state has commissioned a 30,000-litre solar-powered borehole at its Officers’ Mess complex.
The water project, a generous donation from the Aduro Foundation, is part of events commemorating the Nigerian Navy’s 69th anniversary, currently being celebrated under the auspices of the Western Naval Command in Lagos.
The project, which was bankrolled by a philanthropist and Ondo State indigene, Prince (Dr) Anthony Aduro, was built to address the acute potable water shortage the Base has faced since its establishment in 2005.
Sources said the area’s groundwater had been heavily contaminated, making access to clean water a persistent operational and welfare concern.
The new facility has a specialized purification plant, that would ensure safe consumption of water by naval personnel.
The commissioning ceremony was graced by a representative of the Executive Governor of Ondo State, traditional rulers, dignitaries, and other stakeholders.
The Deputy Chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Mrs Esejuwon Oluwaruntimi, who represented the Governor of Ondo State, commended the ADURO Foundation and the Navy’s commitment to community development.
Rear Admiral Michael Oamen, Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, represented by Command Operations Officer Commodore A. Mohammed, praised both the Foundation and the Commanding Officer of the Base for delivering a project of such lasting impact.
The Commanding Officer of FOB Igbokoda, Captain Aliyu Usman, in his welcome address, extended gratitude to the project’s benefactors and called on other well-meaning individuals and organisations to support security institutions with similar initiatives.
He assured that the Base will maintain the facility to ensure it continues to serve both naval personnel and the surrounding community.
