The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has called on secondary school students across Nigeria to become active participants in the fight against corruption, urging them to lead with integrity, honesty, and exemplary character.
This charge was delivered during an educational visit to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja by students and staff of three secondary schools: Government Science and Technical College, Kwali; All Girls Grammar School, Apo; and Bethel International High School, Karu.
The visit, held on Wednesday, formed part of the Commission’s broader initiative to promote integrity and anti-corruption values among young Nigerians.
According to the ICPC, engaging students early in the principles of accountability and transparency is a strategic step toward building a more ethical and responsible citizenry.
In a statement signed by Mr. Demola Bakare, Director of Public Enlightenment and Education and spokesperson for the Commission, the ICPC emphasized its commitment to instilling values of good character in students as part of its preventive mandate.
Representing the Director during the event, Dr. Oluwasina Babasola, Deputy Director of the Public Enlightenment Division, addressed the visiting students and underscored the vital role of youths in shaping Nigeria’s moral and ethical landscape.
“Every time you choose to do the right thing, even when no one is watching, you are helping to build a better Nigeria
“You are showing that young people can lead with values and integrity”, Dr. Babasola said.
He encouraged the students to be role models in their schools and communities, stating that the future of the nation depends largely on the decisions and character of its youth.
“One day, some of you may become teachers, doctors, engineers, journalists, or even the head of this Commission.
Whatever path you choose, let your character be your strongest asset,” he advised.
Highlighting how students can take immediate steps in the anti-corruption fight.
“You don’t have to wait to grow up before you can fight corruption. It starts now with you.
“By refusing to cheat in exams, by speaking up when something is wrong, by telling the truth even when it’s hard, and by being a good example to your friends”, Babasola added.
During the visit, the students received in-depth briefings on the ICPC’s mandate and operations.
An interactive session was also held to further engage them on the importance of living by moral values and becoming ambassadors of integrity in their respective environments.
The session allowed students to ask questions, share their views, and gain a clearer understanding of the Commission’s role in combating corruption nationwide.
The ICPC reiterated that partnerships with educational institutions remain central to its strategy of raising a corruption-resistant generation.
Through continued engagements like this, the Commission hopes to instill a lasting culture of accountability and civic responsibility among Nigerian youths.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working with schools, educators, and other stakeholders to advance the national anti-corruption agenda and build a society anchored on transparency and ethical leadership.
