In an effort to support the health sector and save lives, the students of Osun State University, UNIOSUN, have mobilised over 1,000 blood donors across.
The event held in Osogbo, on Friday, tagged Osun Donate, was organised by the UNIOSUN Sustainable Development Solution (SDG Solution) in collaboration with the Osun State University Medical Students Association, and supported by the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC).
According to the convener of the event and President of UNIOSUN SDG Sustainable Solution, Motadegbe Adeyemo, the idea for the campaign was born out of a tragic incident involving the death of a leukemia patient who urgently needed 24 pints of blood, but could only get 12.
“The idea actually came when we lost a patient to leukemia. The person needed 24 pints of blood and all we could get was 12. That experience stayed with us.
“I didn’t even expect this number. We have over 450 seats already occupied, and we’re hopeful of hitting our 1,000 donor target. We are students and we have the number and we also have the platform, but we don’t have the budget. For example, the budget for this event was about N20m, but we are only able to raise N2m, so imagine we have all the resources we needed, this would have been bigger, but still we are here making it happen.”
Meanwhile, the Head of Donor Recruitment, The National Blood Service Agency, NBSA Southwest Zonal Centre, Abel Abu, described the exercise as a commendable and strategic initiative that aligns perfectly with the agency’s mission of ensuring a safe and adequate blood supply across Nigeria.
“The mission of the National Blood Service Agency is to ensure that we have safe and adequate blood for Nigerians.
“And to achieve that, we must constantly reach out not just to academic institutions like this, but also to community and religious groups to raise awareness on the importance of blood donation.”
