In a solemn and inspiring tribute, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, President General, of Ohaneze Ndigbo has joined special guests and family members to honor the enduring legacy of the Late Chief Edwin Clark, describing him as a resolute leader, fearless advocate, and unwavering champion of the Niger Delta cause.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries, stakeholders, and well-wishers, Senator Azuta-Mbata reflected on Chief Clark’s lifelong commitment to justice, resource control, and environmental sustainability. “Chief Clark’s life was a testament to his unwavering devotion to the struggle for equity and development in the Niger Delta,” he said. “His leadership of the Pan Niger Delta Forum ignited a united front for securing a fair share of Nigeria’s resources for our people.”
The Senator noted that Chief Clark’s legacy continues to inspire the nation’s quest for unity, equity, and justice. “His voice was never silent in the face of injustice. His commitment to addressing systemic underdevelopment and poverty remains a guiding light for the next generation of leaders.”
Azuta-Mbata stressed that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity, but also warned that unity must be deliberately nurtured. “Our cultural richness, intellectual capital, and entrepreneurial energy are great assets—but only if we harness them wisely,” he said. “We must confront the fragility of our unity with sincerity, reform, and inclusiveness.”
Drawing parallels with national icons like Chief Michael Imoudu and Alhaji Waziri Ibrahim, the Senator emphasized that Chief Clark’s cause—resource control—was more than political; it was moral. “He believed the Niger Delta people deserved a fair return for what they contribute to the nation. That conviction inspired movements, policies, and generations.”
To continue Chief Clark’s legacy, Azuta-Mbata called for urgent structural reforms, including decentralized policing to address insecurity and initiatives such as the National Livestock Transformation Plan to resolve farmer-herder conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence.
“Giving states more control over their resources is not just smart economics; it is the pathway to reducing poverty, fostering peace, and promoting sustainable development,” he added.
The Senator concluded with a powerful call to action, quoting former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo: “Our diversity is an economic strength, and harnessing it is hugely rewarding.” He urged all Nigerians to rise above division and work together for a truly inclusive and equitable nation.
“Shall the labors of our heroes past be in vain?” he asked rhetorically. “The answer is a resounding no. We will continue their work. We will build a better Nigeria for all.”
