Troops eliminate notorious bandit leaders in Zamfara, restore order in Kaura Namoda

CHIDIMMA UCHEGBU, Abuja

The 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, under the command of Brigadier General Timothy Opurum, has recorded a major operational success in its ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry in Zamfara State.

Captain Suleiman Omale, 1 Brigade’s Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, disclosed this in a statement on Friday to newsmen.

He explained that, in the early hours of May 1, 2025, troops of Combat Team 6 (CT 6) engaged a large number of armed terrorists in Mai Kwanugga village, Talata Mafara Local Government Area, killing several terrorists, including five notorious bandit leaders: Auta Jijji, Dankali, Sagidi, Kachallah Rijaji, and Kachallah Suza.

According to him, troops recovered a significant cache of arms, including 4 AK-47 rifles, 1 PKT Machine Gun, 2 RPG tubes, 6 RPG bombs, 28 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and 43 rounds of PKT ammunition.

He added that the locals later handed over additional arms and confirmed further details about the eliminated terrorist leaders.

The statement noted that two civilians were regrettably caught in the crossfire, and the situation is being closely monitored.

In a separate development, troops of Combat Team 2 (CT 2) responded to a protest by residents of Dayau village in Kaura Namoda LGA, who had blocked a major supply route due to frustration over recent bandit attacks.

In a swift and soft response, the security team conducted a non-violent crowd dispersal operation, restored calm, and reopened the road.

He explained that normalcy has since returned to the area, and routine activities have resumed.

Brigadier General Timothy Opurum commended the gallantry and professionalism of the troops and reassured citizens of the Brigade’s commitment to restoring peace and security across the state.

The Nigerian Army encourages the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies and to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
