Defection: PDP Chairman Damagun lashes out at Delta Gov, others for abandoning party, describes defection as betrayal of trust

CYRIL MBAH, Abuja

Acting National Chairman of the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Amb. Umar Damagum, has described the recent exit of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former PDP Vice Presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as very “sad and disappointing.”

Damagum who made these remarks on Thursday while speaking at the presentation of the certificate of return to the PDP Governorship Candidate for the November Anambra State election, Ambassador Jude Ezenwafor, stated that Delta State should have paid back the party with unquestionable loyalty because PDP showered longstanding support for the state during its trying times.

Damagum however expressed confidence in the future of the party, stating that the 2027 general elections will not be a battle of political parties alone but a showdown between the APC and the Nigerian people.

He emphasized that the defections of political figures do not necessarily dictate electoral outcomes, and while referring to the performance of Labour Party’s Presidential candidate,  Peter Obi in the 2023 election despite his lack of gubernatorial support, he accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of manipulating political actors through coercion, intimidation, and undue influence to weaken the opposition.

Damagun also called attention to the current hardship facing Nigerians, stating that it has not been easy enduring the hardship brought upon the nation by the APC-led government and he urged citizens to recognize that the stakes at the upcoming elections transcend individual politicians.

Damagum reaffirmed faith in the intervention of divine providence and expressed belief that the PDP would emerge victorious in the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election and move ahead to bounce back at the national stage.

He urged Ambassador Jude Ezenwafor to remain steadfast and focused, assuring him of full backing from the national leadership.

The chairman concluded with a message of unity and resilience, by urging PDP members to consolidate efforts and ensure the party’s strength ahead of the next political election.
