.Insists dialogue, understanding only way forward
Ex-militant leader and prominent Ijaw figure in the Niger Delta region, Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, has expressed confidence that the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, will be reinstated at the expiration of six-month emergency rule,
He disclosed this during celebrations marking his 54th birthday on Saturday, held in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Governor Fubara was suspended on March 18 following declaration of state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu, under controversial circumstances.
Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were also suspended.
Fubara was replaced by a sole administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas, who will govern the state for an initial six months. This has continued to generate mixed reactions from Nigerians.
Both Fubara and Tompolo are Ijaws.
However, addressing a mammoth crowd, Tompolo said: “We have only one state, and our focus remains on Bayelsa. If you think power lies solely in being president or governor, and you attempt to undermine Bayelsa, you will face consequences.”
He further emphasized solidarity within the region, stressing:
“One of us is stronger than twenty. Our brother, the governor of Bayelsa State, no matter our political disagreements—will always have our support.”
Referring to Fubara’s ordeal, he added:
“Even in Rivers State, our son Fubara will return to his rightful place. Dialogue and understanding will prevail.”
Tompolo also reflected on the political dynamics that led to Fubara’s emergence, referencing former Governor Nyesom Wike’s role in his ascension:
“Wike is my friend, but when he chose Fubara, no Ijaw man was involved or consulted. Yet, here we are standing for truth.”
Governor Fubara’s suspension, along with that of other elected officials, stemmed from an ongoing political conflict between him and his predecessor, Wike—a dispute that continues to shape the political landscape in Rivers State.
