From Cyril Mbah Abuja.
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday commenced early preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chairmanship election coming up next year with the inauguration of a new State Working Committee (SWC) to lead the party to victory.
The party explained that the early arrangement was part of moves aimed at fostering unity and peace within the ranks of the party and consolidating efforts ahead of the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections.
The inauguration ceremony which took place at the APC National Secretariat, was presided over by the National Vice Chairman North, Muazu Bawa Rijau, who inaugurated the new committee, after he urged the members to commence work immediately.
The Zonal Secretary of APC North Central,Yakubu Mohamed, who addressed journalists after the inauguration emphasized the importance of unity for the party to win the six area council seats. APC won three councils namely Abaji, Kwali and Gwagwalada in the 2023 elections while the Peoples Democratic Party PDP took the remaining three namely Kuje, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) and Bwari
Mohamed said, “I am privileged to address you here today to announce the outcome of today’s gathering in the national secretariat with the newly reconciled executive of the party in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) being inaugurated on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) by the National Vice Chairman North, Muazu Bawa Rijau.
“He inaugurated them and asked them to go back to the FCT Secretariat and start working. They are the State Working Committee (SWC). There were a lot of issues but we are now united. The party is united. They will now go back to start on a clean note to work hard to be able to deliver the party in the Federal Capital Territory.
“Thank God, this issue has been resolved. Today, we have an authentic list of the State Executive Committee and we have as well, the authentic list of the local government executive, as well as the ward excos in FCT,” Mohamed said.
Mohamed pledged the commitment of the party to deliver the FCT to the APC as members of the party gear up for the 2026 FCT Council Elections and 2027 general elections.
“We are promising the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, by the special grace of God that come 2027, we are going to deliver FCT for APC.
“We will deliver the six area councils and the 62 wards in the FCT. We are assuring you, we have no doubt, we are now united, and the unity will go down to the ward,” he declared.
The FCT APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdulmalik Usman, echoed the sentiments of unity and resolve and promised that the party will win all the chairmanship and councillorship seats.
“We are charged with the responsibility of this party to lead and also work hard to see the victory for the party in the next coming election in FCT.
“We hope we are going to do 6 over 6 and 62 over 62 by the grace of God. We are leaving now, and after this, we have a lot to do in the area councils and that of the wards to see that all hands are on deck to see to the victory of this party in the coming election,” Abdulmalik assured.
Political observers noted that It is doubtful whether the committee would be able to resolve the bitterness among members after several years of internal wrangling within the FCT chapter of the party, but the move signifies a fresh start especially because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), last week published the timetable for the council election expected to hold in February 2026.
