From Victor Duruamaku Owerri
Shortly after former Imo State Governor Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha declared his intention to run for the 2023 governorship election in Imo state at a forum dubbed “Egbu Declaration”, a group, raised alarm alleging that the former Governor had run foul of the electoral act
According to the group including traditional leaders and political stakeholders of the three senatorial zones of the state entreated relevant institutions including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to call Ihedioha to question
The Group insisted that the former governor and allegedly violated the electoral act.
At a joint press conference in Owerri, the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA) Owerri Zone Political Leaders Forum (0z0POLF) and Okigwe Political Assembly (OPA) as “ill timed governorship campaign/declaration of the former governor
Chief Rex C. Anunobi, National President of OPOCA in a statement also endorsed by Hon. Matthew Omegara National President (OPA) Barrister Kingsley Ononuju Ekwedasike – National secretary OZOPOLF as well as Chief Sam Osuji National Secretary OPA, regretted that the former ex-governor at the controversial “Egbu Declaration”, unfolded his 2023/24 gubernatorial ambition,
In words, Anunobi said “Shortly after the so-called “Egbu Declaration”, Ihedioha through his party apparently declaring war against the state, her peace-loving people and the governor of Imo State issued a counter-warning to Imolites and Nigerians who intend to return home or visit the State during the Yuletide to drop such idea to avoid being “slaughtered like Chicken”.
This unfortunate statement is undisputedly a counter directive on Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma assured and guaranteed safety he made earlier to Imolites returning home during the Yuletide”.
Chief Anunobi- a former Nkwerre Council Chairman as well as ex-commissioner for Transport in the state castigated Chief Ihedioha for his indifferent attitude to the security challenges, COVID-19 pandemic and sundry challenges confronting the state which it said governor Hope Uzodimma and other well-meaning stakeholders in the state fought gallantly to bring to control.
Dwelling on the state charter of equity which rotates the governorship seat among the 3 zones of the state, Anumoti argued that since governor Uzodinma is constitutionally entitled to second term in office, that equity and zoning of the state’s number one office should begin with him and his Orlu zone after which it would rotate to Owerri and Okigwe zone in 2028 when he (Uzodimma) might have exhausted his constitutional second tenure.
“To guarantee the effectiveness and practicality of this political arrangement and understanding, the other 2 zones are advised not to field candidate(s) or contest against the zone upon which the governorship is domiciled”.
Anunobi explained that the bottom line of the resolution is that both Owerri and Okigwe zones should not field governorship candidates in any of the competing political parties until 2028.
