Damilola Olumuyiwa : Building a filmmaking legacy one story at a time

Damilola Olumuyiwa is steadily carving a name for herself in Nigeria’s fast-evolving film industry as a writer, aspiring producer and director whose focus is rooted in one clear goal: to build a lasting legacy through storytelling.

Although she holds a degree in Accounting and Finance, Damilola’s career trajectory has taken a creative turn driven by her deep passion for writing and narrative development. What began as an interest in storytelling has evolved into active participation in Nollywood’s creative ecosystem where she continues to refine her craft and expand her portfolio.

Speaking on her journey, Damilola explains that her transition into filmmaking was motivated by a strong desire to tell stories that resonate with audiences while contributing meaningfully to the industry.

“I have always been drawn to storytelling. Over time, I realised that this was not just a passion but a career path I wanted to fully commit to,” she said.

Her entry into the industry has been shaped by collaboration and hands-on experience. Damilola has worked alongside filmmaker Kehinde Joseph in story development across several projects including Bling Lagosians, Merry Men 1 and Dear Affy. These experiences provided her with practical insight into professional screenplay development and film production processes within Nollywood.

Through these collaborations, she has developed a stronger understanding of structure, character development and narrative execution, skills she continues to build upon as she advances in her career.

Beyond development work, Damilola has also progressed into writing for television series and feature films, further expanding her creative scope and establishing herself as a developing screenwriter with a growing body of work.

Her ambition is clearly defined: to become a globally recognised filmmaker whose work contributes to both African cinema and international storytelling conversations. She draws inspiration from established industry figures such as Kemi Adetiba, Jade Osiberu and Bolanle Austen-Peters whom she describes as female trailblazers who have demonstrated the global potential of African stories.

“These women have shown that it is possible to build world-class productions from African perspectives. Their journeys motivate me to keep improving and to remain consistent in my craft,” she noted.

As Nollywood continues to gain international recognition, Damilola represents a new generation of creatives positioning themselves within the industry through consistent development, collaboration and creative output.

With each project and collaboration, Damilola continues to strengthen her presence in the industry, gradually building what she describes as her long term goal, a filmmaking legacy defined by impactful stories and sustained creative contribution.

For her, the journey is not rushed but deliberate. And in her own words, it is a story still being written, one script at a time.

For a better society
